 FAST FACTS 
  • 57% of emergency room visits by seniors are associated with alcohol use.
  • Alcohol (wine, beer, mixed drinks, spirits) misuse, abuse, or alcoholism contribute to increased sickness and death. These drinking patterns contribute to many chronic, disabling diseases including liver disease, heart disorders, malnutrition, falls, and mental status changes.
  • Alcoholism is a disease which requires medical assistance to treat and control.
  • Not all alcohol abuse is alcoholism.
  • Alcohol misuse, abuse, and dependence are treatable.
 WHAT TO DO 
  • Look for education programs that include information about safe drinking levels.
  • Get a medical evaluation and treatment.
  • Find self-help/support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
  • Get outpatient treatment.
  • Get inpatient treatment.
