FACTS |
- Depression is
not a normal part of aging.
- Depression is
a long lasting sadness that just will not go away.
- Symptoms of
depression may include: feelings of hopelessness and helplessness;
feeling blue or discouraged; frequent irritation; feelings
of failure; lack of satisfaction; unable to enjoy activities
that used to be fun; and multiple physical complaints that
never seem to get better.
- Depression
contributes to loss of independence, loss of mobility, self-neglect
for activities of daily living, isolation, poor nutrition,
and behavior problems.
- Suicide rates
increase with age and are highest among those over 65 years
of age.

TO DO |
- Depression
is treatable. Interventions include:
- Medical evaluation and treatment
- Exercise (individual or group)
- Nutrition support
- Support groups
- Congregate meals
- Socialization
- Get a depression
screening from a nurse, social worker, or physician.
