Take Herbal Supplements

 FAST FACTS
  • Herbal supplements are a medication. They usually affect a person in the same manner as prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • No regulations exist for herbal and plant supplements. These supplements may contain substances such as metals and other unsafe materials that may cause medical problems and other dangerous side effects.
  • Some herbal supplements may interact with over-the-counter and prescriptions medications to cause serious harm.
  • "Natural" does not mean safe or without any harmful effects. Some herbal supplements may cause liver damage (kava and comfrey for example), blood clotting difficulties (garlic and gingko biloba), or other complications.
 WHAT TO DO
  • Always check with your doctor or health care provider before using any herbal or plant supplements.
  • Make a list of all herbal and plant supplements and medications that you are taking, and share the list with your doctor at each visit.
 WHERE TO GO
