No Smoke Alarm

 FAST FACTS 
  • There is a fire every half hour in someone's home.
  • People over the age of 65 face the greatest risk of dying in a fire.
  • Older people suffer more when injuries and smoke inhalation occur.
  • 80 percent of all fire deaths take place in houses and apartments not equipped with working smoke detectors.
  • Smoke detectors can provide an early warning which allows people to escape a fire.
  • Smoke detectors are inexpensive, about $15.00. Seniors who cannot afford them may be able to get one free from their local fire department if this service is available in their community.
  • Smoke detectors should be installed on each level of the home and be tested regularly to make sure the batteries are working. Batteries should be replaced at least once a year.
  • Every person should have an escape route from his home.
 WHAT TO DO 
  • Contact your local fire department for smoke alarm resources.
  • Get into an education program.
  • Get assistance to install smoke alarms and/or annually change batteries of smoke alarms in the home.
