FACTS |
- There is a fire
every half hour in someone's home.
- People over
the age of 65 face the greatest risk of dying in a fire.
- Older people
suffer more when injuries and smoke inhalation occur.
- 80 percent
of all fire deaths take place in houses and apartments not
equipped with working smoke detectors.
- Smoke detectors
can provide an early warning which allows people to escape
a fire.
- Smoke detectors
are inexpensive, about $15.00. Seniors who cannot afford
them may be able to get one free from their local fire
department if this service is available in their community.
- Smoke detectors
should be installed on each level of the home and be tested
regularly to make sure the batteries are working. Batteries
should be replaced at least once a year.
