 FAST FACTS 

  • Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs usually caused by bacteria, virus, or chemical irritation.
  • Pneumonia begins with high fever, cough, and stabbing chest pains.
  • It often follows a cold or flu, but can also start on its own.
  • Complications due to pneumonia may lead to death.
  • Pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death in America from a vaccine-preventable disease.
  • The pneumococcal vaccine is very good at preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death. However, it is not guaranteed to prevent all symptoms in all people.
  • The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for all people 65 years of age or older.
 WHAT TO DO 
  • Get a pneumonia vaccine from a primary physician.
  • Educate seniors about symptoms of pneumonia and suggested preventive measures.
