FACTS |
- Pneumonia is
an inflammation of the lungs usually caused by bacteria,
virus, or chemical irritation.
- Pneumonia begins
with high fever, cough, and stabbing chest pains.
- It often follows
a cold or flu, but can also start on its own.
- Complications
due to pneumonia may lead to death.
- Pneumonia is
one of the most common causes of death in America from a
vaccine-preventable disease.
- The pneumococcal
vaccine is very good at preventing severe disease, hospitalization,
and death. However, it is not guaranteed to prevent all symptoms
in all people.
