 FAST FACTS 
  • Auto accidents are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death in children 5 to 15 years of age.
  • Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children under age 5. Most drownings occur when a child falls into a pool, or is left alone in the bathtub.
  • Each year cribs are involved in more than 70 percent of all nursery related deaths among infants.
  • Playing with matches and lighters is the leading cause of fire deaths and injuries for children ages 5 and under. Non-pharmaceutical products and plants rank the highest among potentially poisonous substances.
  • Ohio law states that children under age 4 and under 40 pounds must ride in an approved child safety seat. After that, children should use a booster seat until 8 years of age. The back seat is the safest place for all children when riding in a car.
